Examples of Using ChatGPT for Google Ads

Managing Google Ads campaigns can be a daunting task, with the need to constantly create, edit, and optimize ad copy to stay ahead of the competition. ChatGPT and other generative AI tools can help make it easier and more efficient.

In this article, I’ll review some of the benefits and use cases of using ChatGPT for Google Ads.

What is ChatGPT and How Does it Work for Google Ads?

ChatGPT is a large language model developed by OpenAI that uses machine learning to generate human-like text. When used for Google Ads, it can create ad headlines, descriptions, and even landing page content based on given prompts.

However, it’s important to note that you’ll need the paid version for ChatGPT to use real-time data from across the web (ChatGPT Plus).

Benefits of Using ChatGPT for Google Ads

Using ChatGPT for Google Ads can increase efficiency by saving time on brainstorming and writing ad copy. It also enhances creativity by generating fresh ideas and prevents repetitive messaging.

By helping understand audience preferences, it can enhance ad relevance. Moreover, it streamlines the ad creation and optimization process.

Key Use Cases for ChatGPT in Google Ads Management

ChatGPT’s application in marketing is vast and versatile. One could think of it as a professional marketing sparing partner.

Here are some key use cases for using it for Google Ads:

  • Brainstorming ad copy: ChatGPT can generate compelling headlines and descriptions based on your keywords and target audience (for search or performance max campaigns). For example, you could ask it to create different ads to test various marketing angles of the products you promote.
  • Optimizing existing ad content: ChatGPT can analyze your current ad copy and suggest improvements for clarity, relevance, and call to action. A prompt like “How can I improve this ad copy for a luxury watch brand?” can provide valuable insights.
  • Understanding your target audience: By analyzing competitor ads and marketing materials, ChatGPT can offer insights into audience preferences and language. A sample prompt could be “Analyze the messaging of this competitor’s ad for a skincare product.”
  • Generating landing page content: ChatGPT can create basic landing page copy that aligns with your ad message. For instance, “Generate a landing page intro for a new organic food store” can yield engaging content.
  • Proofreading and editing: ChatGPT can identify grammatical errors and enhance the overall flow of your ad copy and landing page content.
  • Keyword research: Get ideas for new keywords, based on existing keywords, or new angles you’d like to expand on.
  • Distinguish your brand from competitors: If you provide ChatGPT with details about your competitive landscape and the brand and products you promote, you can ask for points that help your brand stand out more.

Examples of ChatGPT Prompts For Google Ads

For optimal results with ChatGPT, clear and specific prompts are essential. A good prompt should include the target audience description, campaign goals, product/service details, keywords, and the desired tone of voice.

Here are a few examples of prompts I use:

  • Create ad copy: Pretend you’re a professional Google Ads marketer. You promote a brand selling healthy, easy, and fast-to-prepare meals, targeting customers in New York City, ages 18-30. The brand’s USPs are healthy, organic ingredients, ready to eat in 5 minutes, and free shipping on orders from $40. Please write 15 headlines (each with a maximum of 30 characters) and 4 descriptions (each with a maximum of 90 characters) for a Google Search campaign.
  • Optimize ad copy: Pretend you’re a professional Google Ads marketer. In your performance max campaign, this headline is indicated with low performance: ‘Nutritious Meals in 5 Minutes’. Suggest 3 options to optimize this headline (maximum 30 characters).
  • Find talking points and angles: Pretend you’re a professional marketer, promoting an online brand selling healthy, easy, and fast-to-prepare meals, targeting customers in New York City, ages 18-30. Suggest 5 talking points that could resonate with the target audience, e.g. their pain points, needs, and things they love.
  • Landing page copy: Pretend you’re a professional marketer, promoting an online brand selling healthy, easy, and fast-to-prepare meals, targeting customers in New York City, ages 18-30. The brand’s USPs are healthy, organic ingredients, ready to eat in 5 minutes, and free shipping on orders from $40. Suggest a product description for the landing page (one page includes 10 different meals customers can choose from). It should include the general USPs of the brand, and convince visitors to make a purchase. The tone of voice should be young and friendly, avoid sounding too salesy.
  • Brainstorm performance: Pretend you’re a professional Google Ads marketer. You promote a brand selling healthy, easy, and fast-to-prepare meals. CPAs increased by 30% over the past 2 weeks, while spending remained stable and no significant changes were made. What might be the reasons? What metrics should I be looking at?
  • Discover new keywords:  Pretend you’re a professional Google Ads marketer. You promote a brand selling healthy, easy, and fast-to-prepare meals, targeting customers in New York City, ages 18-30. What keywords around the topic of easy-to-prepare meals should I target in my search campaigns?

Notice how I always prime the Chat to pretend to be a professional marketer. This helps to get answers in the right context.

Tips For Winning ChatGPT Prompts For Marketers

Here are some guidelines I’ve developed over time to improve my prompts:

Be Specific As Possible

Marketers shouldn’t just throw a broad topic at ChatGPT.  Instead, provide clear details about the target audience (demographics, interests), campaign goals (brand awareness, conversions), product/service features, and desired tone of voice (informative, humorous).  The more specific the prompt, the more relevant and targeted the output will be.

Play Pretend

Frame your questions in the right context, e.g. ‘Pretend you’re an expert Google Ads marketer’. This will help the AI provide answers in the right direction.

Start Simple and Drill Down

Don’t overwhelm ChatGPT with overly complex prompts. Begin with a basic request and use the initial output as a springboard.  Refine the prompt by adding specific keywords, adjusting the tone, or providing more details based on the first draft. This iterative approach allows for a more controlled and successful outcome.

Useful GPTs For PPC Marketers

ChatGPT also offers thousands of GPTs – modules trained on niche data sources by individuals and companies for specific use cases.

These GPTs are only available with ChatGPT Plus (paid version).

Here are some GPTs I use:

  • Write For Me: Write tailored, engaging content with a focus on quality, relevance, and precise word count.
  • PPC Support and Strategic Advice (by Thomas Eccel): Expert in Google Ads, Google Analytics, and other PPC topics. Focusing on technical support and strategic advice.
  • Landing Page Copywriter: Write a perfect copy for your landing page based on your offer and your target audience.
  • Keyword Planner: Integrated with data from Google Keyword Planner. You can retrieve real-time search volume, CPC price, and related keywords of each keyword.

You can search thousands of GPTs here.

Important Considerations and Limitations

While ChatGPT is a powerful tool, it’s important to fact-check all generated content and maintain control over the creative direction. AI suggestions require human refinement, and human expertise is crucial for strategy and campaign management.

Conclusion

ChatGPT for Google Ads is a powerful ally that can add value to your ad management process.

By leveraging its capabilities, you can enhance your ad campaigns and reach your target audience more effectively.

So, why not experiment with ChatGPT and explore its potential in your campaigns today?
